When the two first met earlier in the season, Anna was a huge underdog playing at the Bird Cage in Melissa, and most in the crowd were shocked when the Lady Coyotes were able to win the first two games of the set. The Lady Cardinals were able to rally for the win, however, and have been almost unstoppable since. Melissa set out to back that up when they took on the Lady Coyotes in Anna on Tuesday. The Lady Cards got the big road win to stay perfect in District 12-3A play, sweeping Anna by an average of 10 points a game in the match.
Connar Newberry got Melissa on the board first with a kill, but Amanda Mink responded with a kill to knot the game at three. An ace from Ashley Henger gave Melissa a three-point advantage, while and a kill from Denisha Hampton brought the Lady Coyotes within one as Anna stayed close early.
Melissa put together a 5-1 run that was capped off with a big kill from Whitney Taylor. With her team trailing 14-8, Anna’s coach took a timeout to settle her team’s nerves.
Melissa went up 19-10 with a kill from Madison Rose, and then a Riley Duzenack kill gave the Lady Cardinals a 12-point advantage. The game was won a few plays later on another kill from Rose.
Anna was able to stay close in the the second match, using back-to-back Melissa errors to even the game at 6-6, but an 8-3 run opened up the game.
Newberry landed a kill to put Melissa up by six, and a Rose kill put it up by nine points. The Lady Cards were able to take the game,
In the final game, Melissa held the advantage from beginning to end — using an ace by Ashley Menger and a block from Rose to build a 15-7 advantage. Trailing by 11, Anna called a time out but it was not enough to slow the Lady Cardinals who had a big block from Taylor and a kill from Newberry late to seal the win.
