An up-and-down pre-d With its first three district games in the books, Melissa is perfect so far. The Lady Cardinals got big wins over Bonham and Princeton during the past week of play and will host Anna on Friday night looking to remain undefeated through the first half of district play.

Melissa 69, Princeton 27

Melissa found a way to silence the usually rowdy and obnoxious Princeton crowd on Tuesday night – by letting its play do the talking.

The Lady Panthers were predicted to finish second in District 12-3A and were supposed to be Melissa’s toughest threat. The Lady Cards were ahead 23-5 at the end of the first quarter and went on to win the game by 42 points.

If Princeton is second best, they are a distant second.

Keonni Conkle got Melissa off to a fast start with a three from the corner. Five consecutive points from Katie Webb and then another bucket from Conkle gave the Lady Cardinals a double-digit lead mid-way through the opening quarter.

Gill Gray had a rebound and put-back that led to a Princeton timeout, and at the end of the opening quarter Melissa led by 18.

The Lady Cardinals continued to add on to their lead with points from Whitney Taylor and others in the second. Melissa really put the nail in Princeton’s coffin in the third quarter when it outscored the Lady Panthers by 14 points and went into the fourth ahead 55-19.

Taylor led the virtually unstoppable Lady Cardinals with 25 points. Conkle added 17 and Webb finished the game with 13 points. Other Melissa scorers included: Megan Conlin (4), Gill Gray (4), Krista Butterfield (4) and Cat Whitten (2).

Melissa went ahead 12-0 at the end of the first quarter, extended its lead to 22 by the end of the first half and then cruised to the home win over Bonham on Jan. 10.

The two teams played even in the second half but the damage needed was already done. Bonham is currently in last place in the district, finishing the first half of play without a win.

Taylor had another solid game, finishing with 22 points, while Webb added 11 for the Lady Cards.

Other Melissa scorers included: Conkle (7), Gray (5), Conlin (4), Lauren Brown (2), Cat Whitten (2) and Bailey Ifft (2).
