The Melissa powerlifters kicked off their season in Anna on Jan. 11. According to the coaching staff, the team is young and gained valuable experience in what was the first-ever meet for many of them.
Freshman Priscilla Adejokun earned a gold medal in her weight class with a 655-pound total lift. Junior Brianna Bradshaw finished in third place in her division with a 615 total, while Bridie Burchett put in a strong performance in her debut with a 365 total.
Much like the girls team, the Melissa boys had many first-time lifters.
Senior Austin Reese finished in fourth place with a 1,160 total, while junior Hunter Montoya finished with a total of 935, including a 400-pound deadlift. Sophomore Jordan Fortner also pulled up 400 pounds in deadlift and finished with an 895 total. Sophomores Max Castillo (860 total) Cole English (790) and Matt Kusano (780) competed well in their first meet as Cardinal powerlifters.
The next meet will be in Sunnyvale on Jan. 25.
