The Lady Coyotes came within one win of taking first in the Bells Tournament over the Nov. 15 weekend and then faced Van Alstyne on Nov. 19. Anna will travel to Leonard on Saturday and then play at Bells on Monday and Aubrey on Tuesday morning before taking a break for Thanksgiving.

Van Alstyne 35, Anna 26

Two youthful teams took the court on Tuesday night as the Lady Panthers played host to Anna. It was slow going at first but the teams were able to find a groove in the second half and it was the Van Alstyne defense that came up strong late, holding the Lady Coyotes to just three points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Panthers held on to win 35-26.

Anna was able to get on the board first as sophomore Jaci Richardson iced two from the charity stripe midway through the opening quarter. With less than two minutes to go in the first, the Lady Panthers called a timeout and the score was still 2-0 but after the break Allison Hensley was able to pull down an offensive rebound and get the put back to score Van Alstyne’s first points. She scored again before the end of the quarter with Ashley Burts getting the dime, and the Lady Panthers led 5-2 at the end of one. Hensley led the Lady Panthers with 13 points in the game.

The second quarter was just about as quiet, with just 11 points scored between the two teams. Dei Moreno had a steal and bucket for Anna and Richardson knocked down a shot, but at halftime the advantage was still Van Alstyne’s as it led 11-7.

Anna’s offense came alive in the second half, with Moreno scoring on back-t- back and-1s to tie the score at 13-13. The Lady Coyotes scored six points in the first 50 seconds of the third quarter.

Van Alstyne put together a scoring run from there, dropping in seven unanswered points with the help of Hensley and Burts. However, Anna responded and scored seven straight with a bucket from Dei Moreno tying the game at 20-all.

Hensley hit a free throw jumper just before the buzzer, and at the end of the third Anna had closed the gap but still trailed by one.

Out of the break, Emma Moreno helped the Lady Panthers get some breathing room with a bucket thanks to a Simmons assist. Emma Moreno finished the game with 12 points for Van Alstyne – six in the fourth quarter.

With 5:40 left in the game, Van Alstyne called a timeout and from that point allowed Anna to score just one point the rest of the way as it went on to win 35-26.
