Melissa participated in the Van Alstyne Tournament over the Feb. 22 weekend, taking two of the five games it played. The Lady Cardinals then fell short on Tuesday against Dodd City, and at the end of the week Melissa stood at 4-8 on the season.

The Lady Cardinals are set to play in the Trenton Tournament beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday against Bells. They come back Friday for a 9 a.m. tilt against Bland and 11 a.m. against Honey Grove.

Dodd City 11, Melissa 8

Melissa hosted Dodd City on Feb. 25. The Lady Cards played hard but their rally fell short in the three-run loss. Melissa started out with a 0-7 deficit after Dodd City got going early. But the Lady Cardinals fought back, closing the gap two within a pair of run in the fifth inning. Keonni Conkle led the team with five hits and two RBI.

Kelsey Smith pitched the entire game also receiving three hits and an RBI.

"I am very proud of how the Lady Cardinals fought back in this game," Melissa Coach Wendy Flinn said.

Van Alstyne Tournament

The Lady Cardinals traveled to the Van Alstyne Tournament for pool play, losing both games on Feb. 20. In the first game, Melissa fell to Van Alstyne 3-11 and then to Sanger by the same score.

On Friday, Melissa finished up pool play by taking down Leonard 8-3 and then beating Bells 4-3. Kelsey Smith was the winning pitcher of both games.

On Saturday, Melissa fell short when it took on Van Alstyne again, this time by a score of 6-0.
