Instead of taking a bye, Melissa opted to face off against an always-tough Home School Association team on Jan. 21. The club gave the Lady Cardinals a run for their money but ended up like most do, on the losing end as Melissa got the 71-54 win.
The Lady Cardinals will get back in district action on Friday night when they play host to Community, which is coming off a loss to Anna on Tuesday night.
Melissa 71, HSAA 54
HSAA was no match for Melissa’s high-powered offense when the Lady Cardinals do what they do: score a lot of points.
The tandem of Whitney Taylor, Katie Webb and Cat Whitten accounted for 60 of the team’s 71 points in the match-up with Taylor leading the flock with 28 points; Webb added 18 and Whitten had 14 points on the night.
Melissa started strong and built a five-point lead at the end of the first. Its offense exploded for 25 points in the second but HSAA was able to keep up for the most part. The lead for the Lady Cardinals was just 11 at halftime.
In the third, Melissa continued to roll, and was ahead 60-42 going into the final quarter on its way to the victory.
Other Melissa scorers included: Megan Conlin (6) and Krista Butterfield (5).
