The Lady Cardinals wrapped up their week with an impressive 18-2 record – even after falling to Celina on Tuesday night. Melissa, however, was working shorthanded when it traveled to take on the Lady Cats, with one injured and three players sick.
"This was a hard loss at an unfortunate time in the season, but luckily we have a bye this Friday to work on getting healthy," Melissa head coach Whitney Nelson said.
The Lady Cards will continue play on Tuesday at Gunter and will kick off their district schedule as they play host to Anna on Sept. 27.
Melissa has had its way with Celina this season, sweeping the Lady Cats so far. It took the Lady Cardinals being extremely shorthanded for Celina to get the upper hand. With one player injured and three other players ill, the team traveled to Celina on Sept. 17 and fell short in three games — 19-25, 19-25, 17-25.
Erin Nelson led the team with eight points off serves and Madison Rose led the team with ten kills.
Dallas Roosevelt was late to Melissa due to traffic on a typical Friday the 13th night. This could have dampened the homecoming celebrations for Melissa and its fans, but despite the delay, the Lady Cards finished off their guests quickly — winning 25-4, 25-6 and 25-7 to move on with the evening.
Riley Duzenack led the team with 22 points off serves — landing 11 aces — and Melcher had 14 points.
Connar Newberry registered 10 kills to lead all players on this night.
