As of Dec. 2, the Lady Cardinals are ranked 18th in the state by the TABC in the Class 3A girls basketball standings. That ranking came shortly after their decisive win over the 4A Denison Lady Yellow Jackets.
Melissa travels to Royse City for tournament play over the Dec. 7 weekend.
Melissa 75, Denison 52
On Nov. 26, the Lady Cardinals extended their undefeated record by defeating Denison, 75-52.
Starters Whitney Taylor, Keonni Conkle and Cat Whitten spent much of the first half on the bench with foul trouble, and junior point guard Megan Conlin was away on a family trip. However, the Lady Cards, behind junior Katie Webb’s 15 first-half points, still managed to go in at halftime with a 14-point advantage.
Webb finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Taylor, Whitten and Conkle stepped up in the second half to score 19, 9, and 7 points, respectively. Freshman Lauren Brown came off the bench to score seven points.

Melissa 70, Lovejoy 58
The Lady Cardinals extended their winning streak to five in a home win over the 4A Lovejoy Lady Leopards on Dec. 3. Melissa took control of the game early with solid 3-point shots from senior Whitney Taylor.
In the first quarter, Taylor put up three shots from outside the 20-foot line and added four free throws. When the quarter ended, the Lady Cardinals were up by six points.
During the second quarter Katie Webb and Keonni Conkle maintained the lead by each adding five points to the score. At the half, the Lady Cardinals took a five-point lead into the locker room, 34-29.
When the final buzzer sounded the Lady Cardinals had put up 70 points in the win, going 24-of-37 to complete 64 percent from the free throw line. They connected on 16 2-point and four 3-point field goals.
Taylor led the team with 21 points followed by Webb with 18 and Conkle with 12. Megan Conlin contributed with eight points, Cat Whitten scored four and Lauren Brown and Krista Butterfield scored three each.
