The Lady Cardinals softball team traveled to the Whitesboro Tournament for pool play on Feb. 14. Melissa won its pool by beating Van Alstyne 4-3 and topping Bells 4-2.

In their third game, the Lady Cardinals took on Tom Bean and fell 6-4. Stolle Voigt pitched the two winning games and Coach Wendy Flynn said that she did a "great job."

Melissa finished up the day with a 2-1 record, advancing to the championship bracket for Saturday where they played the tourney hosts in their first game. Whitesboro was able to stop Melissa and get the 9-4 victory.

In a game for third place, Melissa took on Tom Bean and fell 9-5. Senior first baseman Kelsey Smith received a place on the All-tournament team.

On the following Monday, Melissa played Tom Bean for the third time in four days. Despite a hard battle, the Lady Cardinals fell 15-10. With the loss, Melissa fell to 2-4 on the season.

The Lady Cards started out the first three innings of the game rough with numerous errors but fought back in the final four innings.

Freshman Rebecca Pittman and senior Smith both hit home runs and recording two RBIs.

The Lady Cardinals travel to the Van Alstyne tournament on Thursday, facing the home team at noon. Melissa then takes on sanger at 1:20 p.m. On Friday, the Lady Cardinals are scheduled to play Leonard at 4 p.m. and Bells at 5:20 p.m.
