On June 23, the 6U Melissa Cardinals All-Star baseball Team won the "Big School Champions" title in the District 1 Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament. This was a coach pitch tournament (the boys had played coach pitch during the regular baseball season.)
Less than two weeks later, the boys headed to the Dixie Youth T-Ball North Regional State Championship Tournament held in Sulphur Springs. No other 6U team in Melissa has ever gone to state.
As the tournament name implies, this was a t-ball tournament and, thus, a very different strategy, as well as a different type of ball on a grass infield. With less than two weeks to prepare for this major change, the team worked hard to get ready.
The first game on July 6 was against a tough Atlanta Nationals team in the mid-day heat. Although this was the first t-ball game that the boys had played all season, they still managed to pull off a 21-20 win.
On Sunday night, the boys lost to Broken Bow, Okla., the team that ultimately earned the North Regional State Championship. On Monday night, the boys played Hooks and dominated the entire game until the final inning.
Hooks ended up defeating the Cardinals 20-19 in a heartbreaking end to the state tournament.
"Although the odds had been stacked heavily against them, these boys never stopped fighting for wins," Melissa coach Daniel James said. "They represented Melissa well, and we are proud of all they have accomplished. They will forever be a part of Melissa’s history as the first 6U team to go to State."
