Late Monday afternoon, the high school football players for Anna High School reported to the field for two-a-day practices as the team looks toward the 2013 season. The Coyotes will have two full weeks of practices before their first organized scrimmage on Saturday morning, August 17, in Ponder.

The following Thursday, Anna will play host to Canton before opening up their regular season against Dallas Life on August 30 — the first week of school.

This is Jason Heath’s second season as Anna’s head coach, and he already likes what he is seeing from his team.

"I liked how we moved around," Heath said. "We have some guys that are showing that they have put in a lot of work this summer. We are much farther ahead this year than last year at this time."

Anna graduated two high-caliber players last year but is returning its starting quarterback and several key defensive players. Heath believes that their experience and the time put in this summer in work outs and the 7-on-7 league will show early in the season.

The Coyotes 7-on-7 squad made it to the state tournament for the first time in school history.

"Having the guys for a year in our system is showing," Heath said. "I like what I see out of our seniors and they are doing a good job of setting the tempo in practice. Also, our young guys are coming in and seem to be adjusting well to the high school practices. The thing we are stressing is effort and knowledge."
