As summer break winds down to a conclusion so, too, does the pre-season schedule for the Anna Coyotes. The Coyotes traveled to Ponder on August 17 for their first live scrimmage of the season and will play their second and final scrimmage of the season Thursday against Canton.
"I felt like we did some good things (against Ponder)," coach Jason Heath said. "Offensively, we were our own worst enemy at times. We had too many drops at receiver and could not seem to sustain drives. I felt like our O-line did a good job. We have a lot of little things that need correcting."
Heath praised the effort of the team on both sides of the ball — especially defensive hustle, and hopes that what he saw in Ponder is only the beginning of the continuity needed from that squad.
"Defensively, I liked how we flew around to the ball," Heath said. "We had some missed tackles but had guys around the ball to finish off plays. We are working several guys in at defensive line and need some guys to step up and solidify some spots up front."
As they move forward into their final scrimmage, Heath wants to see some of those areas corrected.
"We know they have some guys on offense that are good and will come hit you on defense," Heath said. "We want to see that we are continuing to improve on both sides of the ball. We will be doing a live half so we want to make sure we are able to make it as close to a Friday night as we can."
Anna will play host to Dallas Life in its season opener in one week; Anna won big on the road last year against the Lions.
Notes: The practice player of the week for last week was Hunter Poyner.
