The year 2012 will always be remembered as a banner year for the Melissa football program. Playing their first year in a Class 3A district, the Cardinals came from behind in a thrilling game against local powerhouse Celina in the season opener at the brand new Allen High School stadium and ended up sweeping the district, earning a title and making it three rounds deep into the playoffs.

And as it usually is with the Cardinals, they’re not settling for last years success.

With some key positions to fill, Melissa players have worked hard over the summer with quarterbacks and receivers making it to the state 7-on-7 tournament. As the Cardinals took the field this week for two-a-day practices the coaching staff was impressed.

"The start of practice has been great so far," Head Coach Seth Stinton said. "Lots of excitement this year and some new faces have already made an impact. We are only two days in, but we’re having lots of fun."

Melissa has just one week left until it participates in their first organized, competitive scrimmage of the season on Friday night, August 16 against Pottsboro.

The Cardinals will travel to Aubrey the following Thursday for their final scrimmage of the year before they play a repeat of last years season opener. Yes, Melissa will open its season against Celina at Allen High School on Thursday, Aug. 29.
