In their last week of games before a quick break for Christmas, the Melissa Cardinals fell in a low-scoring battle against North Lamar but were able to get a road win over Tyler Street.

Melissa will take part in the In-and-Out Tournament in Allen beginning Thursday and will have a few days off before it plays host to Sanger at 5 p.m. on Jan 2.

Melissa 48, Tyler Street 44

Melissa had just three field goals in the first quarter but managed to trail by just three points.

John Gressett had three shots and a free throw in the second quarter to help get the Cardinal offense going, while Cory Regan added six points in the second to help Melissa take a 23-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Regan finished the game as Melissa’s leading scorer with 14 points, while Sheldon Moore added 12 for the Cardinals, with most of his contribution coming in the second half.

Tyler Street refused to go away quietly, however, putting together its best quarter of the game to get within one point with a quarter to basketball left yet to play.

But Moore knocked down a trey, a bucket and three free throws in the third to help the Cardinals stay ahead and keep Tyler Street at bay.

Melissa’s defense clamped down in the fourth quarter to hold Tyler Street to just six points. During that span, the Cardinals built their lead to four with the help pf Will Gray and his five fourth-quarter points.

Other Melissa scorers included: Gray (9), Gressett (7), West (4) and Razo (2).
