Looking to put together a district winning streak, Anna played host to Princeton on Jan. 10. A win would have given the Lady Coyotes a second place standing in district play, but the Lady Panthers were able to outmuscle their hosts to come away with an impressive 58-36 road win.
Anna was sluggish in the opening quarter, struggling to find its offensive pace. The Lady Coyotes went the first four minutes of the game without a score and finally were able to get on the board when Dei Moreno knocked down a shot to stop a 7-0 run by Princeton.
Mikaela Gililland hit a jumper and Jaci Richardson had a pocket-picking steal that she took down the court and put in the hoop to help get Anna going. As the buzzer sounded to wrap the first quarter Amber Ramos hit one from downtown to cut the Princeton lead to seven.
Both teams struggled to find offense in the second quarter. Anna’s defense made a strong stand, holding Princeton to just six points in the period, but unfortunately for the Lady Coyotes Princeton allowed just four points. As the teams went into the locker room at halftime the Lady Panthers led 23-14.
After slowing the Lady Panthers in the second, Princeton was able to get some breathing room as they exploded for 19 points after halftime. Moreno, Richardson and Tessa Hutto added buckets in the quarter for Anna but it was not enough to keep the Lady Panthers from extending their lead to 17 with a quarter to go as they went on to get the big win.
Moreno led Anna with 15 points in the game, the only player in double figures. Breeanna Dilldine added six points for the Lady Coyotes. Other Anna scorers included: Gililland (4), Richardson (4), Ramos (3), Hutto (2) and Avery Oonk (2).
The Lady Coyotes will take on their toughest district foe yet when they travel to Melissa on Friday in an attempt to even their record at 2-2.
