Anna Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem Becky Glover and Melissa Mayor Reed Greer joined ranks with mayors nationwide to celebrate Meals on Wheels’ "Mayors for Meals" by delivering meals to local seniors on March 20.
Each year, Meals on Wheels and Senior Services in Collin County ask elected officials to join the regular meal volunteers as they make their rounds to homebound seniors bringing a noon meal and a short visit. Both Glover and Greer enjoyed the experience and it was the highpoint of the week for the seniors.
Ray Ricchi, Executive Director for Meals on Wheels, stated "this was the most successful year for mayor participation." In addition to the Anna and Melissa mayors, ten other Collin County mayors helped deliver meals.
In Anna, volunteers Dan and Cindy Reynolds brought a "celebrity" along with the meal, adding a special aspect to the day. Deputy Mayor Glover was able to spend a few minutes with each senior and see how the meal program works in her city. Melissa Mayor Greer joined volunteer Pat Daniel on her route. In both cities, the seniors were excited to have their mayors visit with them and one senior said it was a "red letter day."
Meals on Wheels in Collin County has been delivering in both cities for many years, and currently there are 16 seniors receiving a hot noon meal five days a week. Many of these citizens are unable to leave their homes unassisted and the volunteer is the only person they may see each day. The meal provides a third of their recommended daily allowance.
Volunteers and substitute volunteers are needed for the Anna-Melissa area route, especially as the summer months approach and the regular volunteers take vacations. If you are available between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. a few days a month, or as needed to sub, please contact Patricia Clampitt, Volunteer Coordinator, at 972-562-6996 extension 125. Qualifications to deliver Meals on Wheels include a friendly smile, a Texas driver’s license, auto insurance, the ability to pass a background check and attendance at a one-time orientation.
