Our last big summer Story Time before school starts will be Friday, August 23, with the Blackland Prairie Raptors: This is a great show about our feathered friends, right here at the Melissa Public Library. It is best suited for ages 4-and-up to adults, but little ones can step out if need be. There have been large groups for this, so bring a lawn chair for adults; children will sit on their mats in front. Please be seated by 10:15 a.m. to help the birds be calm. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thanks to the Friends of the Melissa Public Library, who helped sponsor this show.

The 2013 Summer Reading program rocked: Congratulations to the 90 kids participating in this year’s program, "Deep in the Heart of Texas," kicking off the 20th birthday celebration of Melissa Public Library. If your child was unable to come to the closing event and you have turned in their reading sheets, be sure to stop by the library until August 27 and their bag and certificate will still be available.

We just bought season 2 of True Blood for vampire lovers and season 3 of Walking Tall for action lovers with your donations of print cartridges and cell phones: Thanks so much, Dr V and his staff! Melissa Public Library is a recycling drop off for Advantage Cartridge. There is a box in the lobby for empty print cartridges, used laptops, tablets, cell phones and iPods. Help save the environment one item at a time and bring in a bit of green to the library budget.

Savvy Seniors at the Computers: All adults are invited to spend some time with our tech expert. Join us on Thursday, August 22 from 2-4 p.m. in the library. Bring your laptop or device or come use one of the library computers and learn how to create an email account, download pictures, try out social media (like Facebook) gather tips about how to make your tech life smoother. Almost one-on-one help. There are no silly questions, we all start somewhere.

For adults looking for a new book, come to the Good Book Club: the club will be held Tuesday, August 27 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library. Bring some titles of books you liked and you will leave with some ideas for yourself. Super informal. Look at the library website for previous reviews of our best books. I just read the latest Brad Thor novel and would love to tell you about it. Can’t make it this time? No worries, we meet every fourth Tuesday of the month.

Volunteer Melissa and Anna: Looking for things to do when the kids are back to school? Have a few hours a week to give back to your community? Enjoy muffins and juice while you see the service opportunities available for adults and teens.
