We Love Summer at the Melissa Public Library. Here’s what’s happening:

—‘Hey, look at me!’ The Melissa Public Library is displaying 24 portraits/self portraits from art students in Ms. Cruce-Malone’s classes at the Melissa High School. The works are superb and really reflect the imagination and creativity of our young artists. Stop in and enjoy. — We learned so much about tortoises from Dr. Janet Starr Hull of the TortShack when she came to storytime on Friday, July 12. Did you know that there are more than 170 animals at the North Texas Tortoise Sanctuary and Conservation Center in the Melissa area? Check out http://www.tortoisesanctuary.org/ and learn how to support this great group and to schedule a visit.

— Story time in the Melissa Public Library is on Fridays from 10:15 - 11 a.m. for lap babies and up. During the summer months, we are planning for story time to include activities that may interest elementary age children as well, so feel free to bring your 6-10 year olds.

— On July 19, Sweet Sue, a beautiful assist dog, will come visit the library while we read.

— On July 26 we will exhibit historical items from our community. Mr. Page and Ms. Diane will be showing items recovered from the blacksmith shop. If you are in 4-H or Scouts, you can use this program for requirements in the history of your neighborhood badges. Adults will enjoy this, also.

— August 2-3 are guys and their picks. Three young men from Anna will bring a guitar, mandolin and a banjo and show us some fine tunes.

— Start Clickin’! The 3rd Annual Friends of the Melissa Public Library Photography Contest will be happening soon. Photo drop-off will begin Saturday, July 20 – Thursday, August 1 at 8 p.m. Winners will be announced at the end of the summer reading program celebration on Saturday, August 10. There is a lot of time to capture those special shots. See the details and registration on our web page. All the photos will be displayed in the library and special winners will be on the windows.

— Get that registration and fee in now for the next babysitting class. The next Childcare & Babysitting program at the Melissa Public Library will be on Saturday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All registration must be in by Friday, July 19 or the class cannot be held; five participants are required. This program helps build confidence, self-esteem and skills necessary to care for infants and children on a daily basis and in emergency situations. Participants learn diapering, feeding, CPR and First Aid. Included is a workbook and completion card. Recommended ages are 10-17 years. Registration forms will be available online at www.cityofmelissa.com/library.

— Come to the Good Book Club on Tuesday July 23 from 11-12:30 p.m. in the library. Bring some titles of books you liked and you will leave with some ideas for yourself. This event is super informal. Look at the library website for previous reviews of our best books.

— Hola! We are continuing our free beginning Spanish class for native English speakers. The class meets every Tuesday from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the community room at City Hall. Spanish-speaking friends, come out and help by conversing with these beginners and sharpen your English skills. The lesson handouts are also on the library webpage under "Adult Learning."
