The Melissa High School Wind Ensemble traveled to New York City, New York to play in a National Youth Concert at the internationally acclaimed Carnegie Hall on March 19. The MHS Band opened the concert, an event which also included the Cushing High School Wind Ensemble from Cushing, Okla., and the Klein Forest High School Wind Ensemble from Houston.

The concert featured four pieces conducted by directors Michael Reddell, Matthew Baggerly and Sheena James. The Cardinals played four pieces: "A Festival Prelude," "Benediction," "Prelude and Fugue in B-flat major," and "Block M."

The concert was attended by more than 50 family members and friends from Melissa who made the trip to New York City to share in the pride of playing at such a prestigious venue.

Fifty-one students and 13 chaperones made the trip to New York City for the concert and were also able to spend a few days visiting the sights of the city. Time was spent viewing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on a harbor cruise, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chinatown and Little Italy as well as the September 11 Memorial and Central Park. Among other locations visited were Rockefeller Center and Top of the Rock for nighttime skyline viewing. The band also enjoyed Times Square and attended the Broadway musical "Wicked" at the Gershwin Theater before returning home.
