What better way to celebrate an anniversary than with friends and food? That was the thinking behind Melissa Christian Church’s 135th Anniversary Heavenly Cook-off Challenge on Sunday. Organizers hosted teams in a barbecue cook-off challenge, offered free food to anyone who wanted something tasty and even had a live Dixie band on hand to ring in the special day. Capturing the Golden Skillet award for first place in the cook-off was Scout Troop 413 and Scoutmaster Scott Ball, while Bill Farmer and the church’s own team won the silver triangle for second place and the good cooks at Shiloh Church of God in Christ took the bronze bowl award in third place. County Commissioner Chris Hill, Don Hixon and Tribune editor Rodney Williams served as judges for the contest. According to organizers, 135 people showed up for the 135th anniversary celebration. Congratulations, Melissa Christian, and here’s to another 135 years in the community.
