America’s birthday is just around the corner and organizers in Anna and Melissa are all set for a party.
The Melissa Celebration of Freedom takes place on Saturday with what promises to be a festive, fun-filled evening for the entire family with a variety of attractions for both young and old. The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with a parade that will start at City Hall, continue down Cardinal Drive and end at Melissa Ridge Intermediate School. Then it will be off to Zadow Park on Highway 5. The children’s area will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., a band will perform from 7 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. and in between there will be craft and information vendors to visit, trackless train rides, face painting, food concessions and a barbecue contest benefiting area non-profit agencies. A classic car display will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project.
The Melissa Education Foundation will be hosting the Give Them Wings art booth from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. showcasing many of Melissa students’ art works. Each piece of art work will be individually priced with all funds raised going toward teaching grants for Melissa ISD teachers.
The highlight of the night — the fireworks show — will start at 10 p.m.
The Celebration of Freedom is hosted by the City of Melissa and the Melissa Area Chamber of Commerce. "Make plans to attend this year’s best family fun event in the county, possibly the state!" said event organizers.
Anna residents will cap their Independence Day activities with a big bang at the annual Freedom Fest fireworks show on Thursday, July 4.
The event will be at the Anna ISD Athletic Stadium (behind Anna Middle School) on N. Powell Parkway and will start at 8:30 p.m. with the presentation of colors and singing of the National Anthem. The fireworks show will follow at 9:15 p.m.
There will be free glow necklaces for the kids (while they last) and refreshments will be available for purchase. And, of course, admission and parking is free.
The Freedom Fest is sponsored by Anna Economic and Community Development Corporations and the Greater Anna Chamber of Commerce.
