January has been designated School Board Appreciation Month, and Anna ISD administration, teachers and students took note. At the Jan. 23 school board meeting board members President Ty Chapman, Vice-President Duane Hayes, Secretary Shelli Conway and members Larissa Thornburg, Brent Hendricks, Pete Cain and Jason Adams were recognized.

Video presentations by Early Learning Center, Bryant Elementary and middle school students featured lively dialogue, songs, dance and enthusiastic "Thank You" cheers to the board members for their contributions to the district. Rattan Elementary students presented each board member with handmade craft items, as well as a painting completed by all the students that will be displayed in the board room. Each board member also received a handmade metal ornament from the high school students.

"We appreciate you all and thank you very much," said Chapman.

It was a fitting celebration since the school board met, for the first time, in its new facility at the Special Program Center. Superintendent Larry Johnson thanked all who were involved in completing the high-tech facility, which is more than twice the size of the old board room.

"We are proud of this new facility for years to come," said Johnson.

In other business:

The board approved the financial audit for the 2012-13 school year.

Also approved was the Bad Weather Waiver for Dec. 10. "We had built into the calendar two bad weather days which were already used prior to December 10," explained Johnson.

At Johnson’s request, board members discussed researching the development of a daycare for district staff members. "We had a request for this and I would like your thoughts," said Johnson. He pointed out that "this can work considering the size of our schools, and the daycare could pay for itself within a year or two if you have enough participation." Board members felt that it was a viable project and gave Johnson the go-ahead to do the research.
