James Richard Anderson

GUNTER — James Richard Anderson (72) of Gunter, Texas went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

He was born May 1, 1944 in Sherman, Texas to Marshall (Shorty) and Marguerite Anderson. He was the middle of three children and a lifelong resident of Gunter.

Upon graduation from high school in 1962, he worked various jobs at Taylor Tank, ran the Texaco station, and farmed. He chose to honor his country in 1965 by joining the Navy during the Vietnam conflict. After his tour of duty, he was inspired to become a firefighter and got a job at the Sherman Fire Department where he spent 28-½ years serving his community. He married Linda Payne of Gunter on August 22, 1974. On his days off from working at the SFD, he took on extra odd jobs including carpentry and delivering freight for RPS. Always doing what it took to support his family. He even had a short television debut on the show Rescue 911 starring William Shatner in 1991. Retirement from the fire department led him to Wilson N Jones Hospital in Sherman, Texas where he worked at plant operations for 16 years. It was there that his co-workers dubbed him “the Hammer”. After his long working career, Richard finally rested his boots on October 31, 2015. He had many friends throughout his life. He had an appealing personality, made friends easily, and tried to get a laugh out of everyone. When he had some free time he spent it helping family and friends with various handyman tasks, or just talking and joking with them.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Andrea Ruth Clayton.

He is survived by his loving wife Linda; brother, Marshall Anderson and his wife Janye and their children from Houston, Texas; son Michael Riley of Howe, Texas; daughter Kristy Hulsey and spouse Jeff of Gunter, Texas; and three grandchildren, Stephanie Riley, Austin Riley, and Alayna Hulsey.
