Melissa High School senior Cale Hayes and junior Jasper Murphy have been selected by the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) for the 2018 All-State Band.
Cale Hayes, son of Ryan and Tami Hayes, plays the bass trombone in the Melissa High School Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Whorton, Dallas Bayless and Connor Pickle. He is a private student of Cory Carter.
Jasper Murphy, son of John and Stacy Murphy, plays the clarinet in the Melissa High School Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Whorton, Dallas Bayless and Connor Pickle. He is a private student of Ken Miller.
More than 9,000 high school band students from 22 different regions across Texas auditioned for a place in their respective all-region bands. The top chairs in each region advanced to one of the five area auditions held across the state and only 280 of these 2,288 students were selected for all-state honors.
The ATSSB All-State Bands will meet rehearse in San Antonio from Feb. 14-17 and will present a concert on Saturday, Feb. 17 in the Lila Cockrell Theatre of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center.
Brian Britt, University of Oklahoma, will be the clinician-conductor of the All-State Symphonic Band. Dr. Matthew McInturf, Sam Houston State University, will be the clinician-conductor of the All-State Concert Band which will premiere the winner of the 2018 ATSSB Composition Competition Chicago Belle Motifs by Kenneth L. Griffin. Jay Saunderse, University of North Texas, will be the clinician-conductor of the All-State Jazz Ensemble which will perform at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 in Convention Center Hemisfair Ballroom 1.
