The Melissa High School cheerleading program traveled to the Fort Worth Convention Center last week to compete in the third annual UIL Spirit State Championships as a part of the Texas State Spirit Championship on Thursday, Jan. 11.
The Melissa Cardinals, led by captain Claire Miller and under the direction of coach Michelle Cruce-Malone, competed in the all-level Coed Division, which included 1A through 6A teams. Melissa broke into the top 10 to finish in sixth place overall.
“With only four males on our team, this was a tough division for us, but a flawless performance resulted in high scores,” said Cruce-Malone.
The teams were evaluated in a total of three categories, earning markings of 66.000 for “Fight Song,” 45.833 for “Band Dance” and 80.000 for “Crowd Leading,” for a combined total of 191.833 points. This made Melissa the highest ranking 4A and under school in the Coed Division.
A total of 20 teams competed in the Coed Division, with Class 6A Lewisville taking home first place with a total score of 216.000, followed by Class 6A Keller Fossil Ridge with a total score of 207.334, Class 5A Azle with a total score of 198.501 and Conroe Woodlands College with a final score of 192.333 rounding out the top five.
