ANNA — Registered voters in the City of Anna will elect a mayor and the council member for place 1 on Saturday, May 5. Votes can be cast on Election Day or during the election’s early voting period.

“Anna residents who are eligible to vote may cast a ballot for both the mayor’s position and the place 1 position,” said City Secretary Carrie Smith. “All of our Council positions are elected on an at-large basis, meaning that everyone who is otherwise eligible, may cast ballots in both races.”

Residents wishing to run for either position, and who meet the eligibility criteria, may declare their candidacy during the month-long filing period, which runs from Wednesday, Jan. 17 to Friday, Feb. 16. Packets containing the appropriate forms and other relevant materials may be obtained in person from the city secretary, 111 N. Powell Parkway, by mail to city secretary’s office, P.O. Box 776, Anna, TX 75409, or by email request to csmith@annatexas.gov.

Nate Pike occupies the position of mayor, while the incumbent in Place 1 is Justin Burr, the current mayor pro tem. Both are eligible for re-election. The individuals elected into these positions will serve for three years. Mayor Pike is currently completing the unexpired term of the former mayor who submitted his resignation prior to the completion of his term.

Potential candidates for these two positions must be qualified voters in city elections, be at least 21 years of age on the date of election, and have been a full time resident of Anna for no less than 12 months immediately preceding election day.

Also, candidates for these positions must be current in payment of taxes or other liabilities due the city after notice of any delinquency. They may not file in a single election for more than one office or position as provided by the Anna City Charter; and must comply with all other applicable city ordinances or resolutions.

The City Charter can be found as part of the Code of Ordinances on the city’s website, www.annatexas.gov. Registration to vote in the May 5 election must be completed by April 5. Voter registration materials can be downloaded from the Texas Secretary of State website www.votetexas.gov. The Collin County Elections Office will soon publish the early voting and election day voting times and locations.

“We encourage eligible voters in Anna to cast their ballot in this election,” said Smith. “Voting for our representatives is a privilege that we enjoy, and should not be taken for granted.”
