As part of its celebration of the 500th anniversary of The Reformation, Christ the Servant Lutheran Church [CTSLC] will host a working replica of the Gutenberg Press on special loan from the Enduring World Museum. The exhibit will be on display from Oct. 13-16.

The exhibition hours are as follows: Friday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. followed by potluck supper and Lutheran hymn singing; Sunday, Oct. 15, 12 p.m.-2 p.m. followed by ELCA Bishop Erik Gronberg visiting the CTSLC with a public welcome; Sunday, Oct. 15, 2 p.m.-5 p.m.; and Monday, Oct. 16, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Gutenberg Press was created by German Johannes Gutenberg around 1400. Previously working as a professional goldsmith, Gutenberg was able to make use of his knowledge of metals while working on the press. He is credited as the first to make type out of a mixture of lead, tin and atimony —elements crucial for producing quality type. Gutenberg invented a special matrix to create these lead types, creating the first priting press with movable type.

Gutenberg’s invention was credited as the beginning of the global spread of the printing press and the Printing Revolution throughout the world. This process spread until the end of the 19th century, when Western printing technology was adopted in all regions of the world, a process which displaced the manuscipt and block printing.

Gutenberg’s invention is crucial to the history of print, enabling countless texts to be mass prodcued and shared.

The event is offered to anyone who wishes to attend and is free of charge. In lieu of paid admission, non-perishable food items are requested by guests who wish to attend. These items will be distributed throughout the Allen Food Pantry and the Allen Community Outreach in order to help locals in need.

Large groups are asked to please contact the church prior to arrival so that proper accommodations can be made.
