MELISSA - Melissa ISD has announced its community-wide Homecoming Celebration, an event encompassing three day days, Sept. 6-8. It includes the town’s first-ever Homecoming parade and will conclude with the Melissa-Lake Worth football game at Cardinal Stadium.

At 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6, the community is invited to a pre-parade tailgate event in designated parking areas in front of Melissa Middle School and Cardinal Stadium. Tailgating spots will be available on a first-come-first-served basis, but no one may park prior to 5 p.m. Questions about tailgating should be directed to MISD Director of Football Operations and Community Partnerships Duke Sparks at 972-837-2411 or dsparks@melissaisd.org.

“Everybody that has been involved with it is excited,” Sparks said of the pre-parade tailgating, another Melissa first. “We have pretty good tailgating at football games so I’d imagine that we’ll have a really good turnout. … Hey, when you do something for the first time you don’t really know how it’s going to turnout. But I think the people will respond pretty good. I know we’ve got a couple of churches that are really excited about it.”

The inaugural Homecoming Parade will start at 6:30 p.m. and local organizations and businesses are encouraged to register a float for the festive one-mile route. The top three decorated floats will be awarded a prize. The parade will start on Cardinal Drive in front of Melissa High School, between Lubbock Lane and Kaufman Road. (See map). A community-wide pep rally at Cardinal Stadium will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Deadline for float registration is Sept. 5 and there is no charge. Entrants may register at melissaisd.org or the printed form may be turned in to Venus Malone at the Melissa High School front office.

The parade’s theme is “Beat the Bullfrogs” and long-time ardent Cardinals fan Helen Browning, 95, will serve as Grand Marshall.

Kickoff time for the Homecoming football game on Friday, Sept. 8, is 7:30 p.m.
