At Monday’s regularly scheduled board of trustees meeting the Melissa Independent School District board approved names for two future elementary schools.
Melissa’s second elementary school is slated to open in the fall of 2018. It will be located on the west side of the North Creek subdivision and construction is scheduled to begin this month. The name of that school will be North Creek Elementary.
Also opening in the fall of 2018 will be the new high school. The middle school will be shifted into the old high school buildings, and the intermediate school will shift into the middle school leaving the intermediate school empty. That school will be renovated into a new elementary school named Country Ridge Elementary and will be the district’s third elementary school.
The board also approved Jackson Construction as the general contractor who will build North Creek Elementary.
Bruce Minchey was appointed as the board delegate to the Texas Association of School Boards Delegate Assembly.
After closed session, the board approved Michele Austin as the new principal of Melissa Ridge Intermediate School. The previous principal resigned from the district.
The board also approved the adoption of an order authorizing the issuance of unlimited tax refunding bonds. This action refinances over $4.8 million in bonds sold in prior years at a higher interest rate and should save the district $800,000 over the life of the remaining bonds.
The July board meeting was canceled. The next meeting will be in August and the board is set to approve the 2018-2019 budget at that meeting.
