Seven train cars carrying gravel derailed in Melissa on Monday night, causing a portion of Throckmorton Road to be closed.

The derailment happened at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Monday night near the intersection of Throckmorton Road and State Highway 5. Melissa Police Chief Duane Smith said the department received a call about the accident and was sent out to block traffic.

No one was injured in the derailment. The cars tipped over causing the gravel to spill out onto the tracks. Smith said police are not investigating the cause of the accident because it was a non-injury accident not involving any other vehicles.

The train cars are operated by Dallas Garland Northeastern Railroad. The Tribune reached out to the company to ask about the cause of the derailment but has not received a response.

Smith said both sides of Throckmorton Road should be back open by Friday.
