Hundreds gathered at Sue E. Rattan Elementary last Friday for the 16th annual Veterans Day Assembly for Anna Independent School District.

“It honors our local veterans,” Sherri Jansen said, the event organizer for the school, said.

In addition to organizing the Veterans Day Assembly, Jansen is also the school’s choir director and music teacher.

Fifth grade choir students sang “This is My Country,” and local Boy Scouts posted colors. Several Anna High School band members played taps, and Edward Talbott sang the “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Organizers invited more than 50 locals veterans from all branches of military to attend.

The choir sang a medley of all the armed forces songs, Jansen said, to recognize all of their service. The guest speaker was Maranda Brown from American Legion Post 194.

“Over 100 adults attended,” Jansen said. “We set out 56 chairs for veterans and only a few seats stayed empty.”
