Students in Melissa High School’s journalism classes have published the first edition of the school’s new online newspaper, The Red Banner.

Two classes research, report, conduct interviews and take pictures to keep Melissa residents up-to-date on a variety of stories. Students have already produced articles focusing on sports highlights, crime, current events and campus news.

Melissa High School teacher and coach Brittany Owens is the adviser for the student publication. Student editors include Kate Abbe, Katy Belanger, Delacy Dennis, Ty Graham and Matt Madonna.

“I am excited for the community to see what my students are up to,” Owens said Thursday. “These budding journalists have worked diligently to create a product that will appeal to all Melissa residents.”

The newspaper functions through School News Online, a website production company that works with scholastic journalism programs to deliver high-quality news websites. SNO provides students the opportunity to submit writing for national awards. Students can compete against each other and other students around the nation for the chance to win top prizes in categories such as multimedia, audience engagement and continuous coverage.

The newspaper can be accessed at The newspaper is also accessible from the Melissa High School page. Local organizations interested in purchasing digital advertising are invited to sign up online.
