LIVE BLOG -- Denison vs. Liberty

After starting the season off with a loss, the Denison Yellow Jackets look to get a victory against a familiar foe by hosting Frisco Liberty at Munson Stadium.

It is the first contest for the Redhawks, who are expected to win District 9-4A and make another deep run after reaching the region semifinals last season.

Follow all the action here on the Live Blog throughout the evening.

REGARDLESS OF WHAT ANYONE THINKS OR HOW YOU FEEL. THESE ARE KIDS WORKING THEIR HARDEST TO DO WHAT THEY LOVE TO DO. I AM QUITE SURE SOME OF YOU THAT SAY YOU ARE AN X PLAYER WAS NOT ALL THAT. IF YOU WERE THEN GO TO SCHOOL AND GET YOUR COACHING LICENSE AND GO COACH. SIMPLE AS THAT. PUT YOUR WORDS TO ACTION. DONT JUST TALK DO IT.

Hi My name is Matt Stepp, I write the HS website theoldcoach.com and I am probably one of the state's biggest advocate for 7 on 7. I do think playing a competitive level of 7 on 7 is extremely beneficial to a program, especially a team like Denison who is breaking in a lot of younger players. I feel that you can only get better by getting valuable reps against very good teams in the summer. There is a time and commitment investment that needs to be made on the part of some of the parents, the kids and even the coaches. It does cost money to enter tournaments and purchase uniforms but IMO if you start on it early enough its worth it.
I know the Denison coaching staff is not a huge proponent of it, but I do believe if a parent or group of parents came forward and presented an organized game plan to participate in those events in the summer I am sure Coach White would at least be interested.
If anyone from Denison needs suggestions on what to do etc. feel free to e-mail me....mstepp@theoldcoach.com

Rally Call : 9/11/2010
I support every Jacket team, win or lose. I think it is only realistic to say that some of our teams simply have more kids with exceptional talent than others. Everyone knew from seventh grade that last year's team would be outstanding. You can see that same potential the freshman team this year. My love for the Jackets isn't based on winning (although that is FUN!)-- What I see in every Denison team that I respect tremendously is HEART and the burning desire to uphold the great football tradition that has been built here in Denison. This team and our coaching staff are working so very hard to realize their potential. It is a young team that is growing up and coming together. As fans, let's do our part to support them by showing up in force-- and let them know how much we appreciate their efforts! Jackets--let every opponent feel that MIGHTY STING!

I have to agree with you that we dont see like any direct attacks on the players at all. It is the coaches that we have an issue with. Us true blue Jacket Fans including the DAWG POUND will drive to basically where ever the game is played and we support the kids in every aspect. We intruly bleed BLACK AND GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GoJackets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you select what kids to use for 7 on 7?. What if the players used for 7 on 7 were subs in the regular season. How do u choose?. I wonder if it would be Parent's kids' that the coaches don't consider as starters. I would hope it would be the best players u could use. I really would be dissapointed with a group of 'Daddy Ball' players beacause of who raises the funds. I personally think that it's a great idea, done with commitment, to have the best players available. A good idea!!if done right..And Please, Don't think that this is a take away from you boy's ability....

Denison's size : 9/10/2010
Denison and Sherman are playing schools that are larger than they are and as a result they don't have the multi-talented positions these larger schools have. Kenedale is south Fort Worth. Frisco has become north Dallas (or Plano, whichever you choose). I think these kids and coaches do very well given the numbers against them. I think instead of screaming at the coaches and kids, booster should just be cheerleaders.

It is a female trait to take things personally, so I am assuming that you are a player's mom. I have read over all of these posts (whew!) several times. I don't see any attacks on your boy's "integrity." Lack of what is called "initiative" is not a considered a character flaw. I'm sure that if I were the parent of a player, I would be oversensitive too at this point. Good Lord, there have been many unkind things said about the coaches and kids, and I am truly sorry about that. I just don't see any attack on the kids or parents that you guys seem to see here. I would take it as a challenge to do more. I'll say it once again-- It might benefit you and the team if you people would listen to a fresh idea without shooting the messenger.

You Misunderstand!! : 9/10/2010
Jacket Parent-- There really is no way to make you see what I'm saying. You are taking everything personally and as an insult-- thinking someone is criticizing you or your child. Please learn how to decipher "main points" of what someone is writing to you. Okay... I said that the Sherman and HP kids took it upon themselves to get together and work to build team unity and work on their skills. This is the definition of "initiative:" "Readiness to undertake something on one's own," That is what THEY did. I asked if our Jackets had taken the "initiative" to do that. Not doing so would be said to be a lack of initiative. If you take that as in INSULT to your son, then you need to grow a thicker skin. Everyone wants to point their finger at the coaching staff this season, but they don't want to hear that there are things these kids can do "on their own to improve." The PARENTS were mentioned because 7 on 7 takes true dedication from parents or boosters to organize the team, raise the money, and coach the kids. There and many of our dads who have tremendous knowledge of the game and great rapport with the boys. It would be rewarding for them to take part in this pursuit! Playing the strong teams from the metroplex could do nothing but improve our teams!! One of the posters who blasted me said I was "three months too late" in mentioning the whole 7 on 7 thing. The point is, if we are ever going to consider it, we need to start talking about it and planing for it NOW! I want what is best for the kids and the team that I love. Go ahead and just nitpick (defined as "engagning in minute and usually unjustified criticism) about semantics and your implied tone of what is said. If what I say to encourage the boys to do "extra" insults you, I really don't care. I want them to be THE BEST they can be! Keep up the status quo if that suits you... Frankly, I think that not trying new and challenging things is, as you say, "going down the wrong path."

Yet Another Parent : 9/10/2010
I agree that Jacket Backer made a valid point but when he negatively threw the kids & parents into it (even if it was unitentional or out of frustration) he went down the wrong path. When I said he/she should speak at a metting I was serious, I talked to a lot of parents who didn't know that 7 on 7 had different levels. Trust me, I'm not an "everyones a winner" parent, I'm not my kids friend & I don't think my kids are "perfect", just the same, I will protect their integrity when someone (who doesn't know them) attacks it. Like I said I grew up in Austin where money talks, boosters pump thousands of their own dollars into the football program & if your a big enough donor you get one on one time with coaches weekly (that's how they got herd). As far as Denison goes, its the same old same old (not much money or listening). I would love to sit in the incredible Dawg Pound, unfortunately I have a band nerd who would be mortified...jk (I was in band too). Go Jackets!

I agree with you that we need to get a 7 on 7 here just look at all the succesfull programs like Lake travis Denton Ryan, Longview Lobos, and I know that Coach white appears not too interested in talking with the kids about that, I do know he cannot directly coach them but he can go. Im just ready for us to finally get a coach in here like Highland Parks Randy Allen, or Brownwoods Bob Shipley etc. I have read in the channel 8 blog where Highland Park doesnt rebuild they just reload, and Denton Ryan And Lake travis, Denton Guyer etc does the same thing folks please understand it is the type of coaching staff that these schools have. We can have these type coaches if WE REALLY WANT THEM. I know if we opened up the coaching job here we would have a ton of quality coaches apply. I went to school here when we couldnt win to save our lives and it was the coaches fault. Until we Hired Marty Criswell and he turned us around as winners. I feel were headed back there again. sometimes the truth hurts folks... I hope im wrong though . GO JACKETS!!!!!!!

How About Some Open Minds Here? : 9/9/2010
It always amazes me how many people are looking to be offended. No matter what is written, they miss the main point of a post, put their own spin on some comment and get mad. Many of the parents here remind me of those I knew when my kids were in school. They are so busy pretending that their sons or daughters are "perfect" that they miss out on the opportunity to guide them or help them with their problems. I can tell you that many of them regret that today. When my boys were in sports, I remember feeling so alienated by the coaching staff (one in particular, if you know who I mean). Questions or comments were not welcomed, for sure! Heck, I would have been thrilled to have some area of the football program that parents could organize and direct like "the real" 7 on 7. I, for one, am going to get on this bandwagon and see if we can get it done.

I typically don't read these things because honestly they tick me off but a parent directed me to your first post & I felt compelled to respond. FIRST, WHEN YOU TYPE IN CAPS YOU ARE YELLING, although you may be passionate, it is OBNOXIOUS. Second, your idea is 3 months too late. Oh wait, it wasn't your idea, you watched some news & read an article, then decided to go online and tell us are kids don't take initiative and scoulded the parents for not holding backyard summer training camps. By the way, YOU obviously don't know what YOU are talking about because YOU don't know what MY kids did this summer. I suppose your two boys are playing college ball or have they moved up to the pros? Yea, I saw your half a apology, Don't bother responding because I won't be back to read it.

I have not missed a single game since 7th grade (I have driven to Wichita Falls to watch my kid play a couple of series at the end of the game) & I typically cheer loud enough to embarass the people who come with me. The only thing I'm concerned about is when a poster comes on here & starts questioning these kids. Question the coaches and their decisions all you want but leave the kids out of it (the poster that I initially commented on). My kid respects & loves his coaches and in the end that's all I can really ask for. Challenge for Saturaday...show up and embarrass the person next to you.

From what I understand, the UIL rules state that the high school coaches can have nothing to do with the 7 on 7 teams (except for helping keep time)-- but NO COACHING! Someone not connected to the staff has to assume that role. It seems important that Coach White would have to sanction having his team take part in it though. It is normally parents, boosters, and fans who organize it and raise the money and arrange transportatoin etc. First, however, it's the PLAYERS themselves who have to be interested in doing it. At least that is what I've been told. I know people who have talked to Denison coaches about it, with no success. Sherman has played in the SQT's for years, and even took part successfully in a tournament in Arkansas. The head coach in Sulphur Springs credits 7 on 7 for turning their program around--the same for Round Rock Stony Point. DeSoto, Arlington Bowie, Celina. Brownwood, and Lake Travis are all perennial winners who feel it has helped them. I recently read an article stating that some of the best quarterbacks in the country are from Texas, and their develpment was linked to the popularity of 7 on 7 competitions. It's certainly something to think about anyway!

If you are a parent of a player, Why aren't you attending the Booster meetings?. Why aren't all of the concerned 'players parents' attending these meetings if you are so passionate for the kids, coaches, Team?.
Ask your son to 'Step Up" and become a vocal leader. The bottom line is Show up to the games and cheer as much as u can. Go Jackets!!!

That was a wonderful, heartfelt, and well- written post. It is so terribly distressing to hear that your son (or any of the boys) feel that this town has turned their backs on them! There are so many of us who LOVE these boys and support them win or lose! It is always such a shame that negative comments seem to carry so much more weight than positive ones. At any level and in any sport, it seems to be all about winning, doesn't it? I certainly do hope that TRUE Denison fans will show up to every game to cheer our Jackets on, and that they will feel that we are PROUD of them and their desire to represent the community of Denison to the very best of their ability! That's all you can ask for really. Please tell your son and his teammates to hold their heads high and keep working hard--- and NEVER give up! Things WILL get better. Winning is always great, but sometimes the CHARACTER that is developed through adversity carries a lifelong reward. GO JACKETS!!!

Money is a reality, and it not only affects the competitiveness of football but also golf, baseball, band & more. You are correct I don't know much about 7 on 7 (my sons a lineman) you just implied that Denison didn't participate in it at all. Maybe you could speak at a booster meetings & inform parents of the different levels & ask the questions that need asking. I went to high school in Austin & when the booster club spoke the coaches listened (another example of the money thing) I do agree that some of these coaches have blinders on. I like the coaches but these boys were neglected the past 2 yrs in preparation of the dream team. Just an insight into the mind of some of these kids, My son came into my room and asked "How can a town that loved and adored you for two years suddenly turn their backs on you in shame?" I let him know that although it may feel like it's the whole town, really it's just a few. One of the best things about football in Denison is the fans, we need to show up for every game like we did last year. If they feel our pride maybe they can regain some of their own.

Just My Opinion : 9/8/2010
No, Jacket Master, I am one of many Jacket parents, but don't "moonlight" as such on the blog. The Jacket Parent you refer to believes that our boys put in more than enough time in practice; I don't! I actually agree with Jacketbacker that our team should take part in what he calls the "REAL" 7 on 7. I mentioned this to my husband and son, but their answer was that our coaches think it's a "waste of time." I agree that the way the Jackets play it, it IS a waste of time, because they don't really focus on it. We aren't playing the strong programs in the metro area like Sherman is. That exposure could only help our team. I was told that Coach White's Permian team excelled at 7 on 7, then had a poor season following. Therefore, he sees no value in it. There is a huge statewide argument between those who like or hate it. All I know is that, as a receiver, my son could have benefited from that work with WHATEVER QB we decide to start. No doubt, the QB's could have benefited from the reps as well! From what I've read, some really successful coaches feel that it has helped their squads. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE OUR COACHES in Denison, and I'm so grateful for them and the GREAT work they do with our sons!! I just feel that sometimes they can be a little close-minded in trying new things. They summarily dismiss any ideas proposed like they resent any input. Sometimes, even though you are the "professional," other people can have a helpful idea if you just listen and consider it.

Obtimistic Futility has set in with me. I however, will never give up hope for this edition of the Jacket Football team. I will continue to support the kids by attending every game this year win or lose. I'm just a spoiled little Jacket Fan that has become use to success year in year out. I see us fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot. Thats exactly what i predicted on here,in the blogs after last year's final game. I also admit to 'Overreacting with all the other Negative bloggers after the first game, Not the Liberty game. I now realize that we are young and it's gonna take a little time. As for as 'Blasting" the players You are wrong Madam Jacket. I did say give Mcclaren (The Senior) a chance at QB because the 10th Grader is still young and inexperianced. I also mentioned that the Liberty receivers did not have a defender covering them. That's a Coaching mistake. I want the Jackets to win every week. It's not in the stars this year. But, Maybe, just maybe, the kids will improve and win that first ballgame and go nuts the rest of the way. Speculate my loyalty all you want, Jacket Mama. You have to look at the negatives as well as the positives to be able to build, advance and succeed. I will not apologize to you or anyone for posting my Insights, opinions!. I DEFINITELY love and support the Jackets! My comments weren't meant as criticism. I apologize if it was taken that way. I was hoping to present a new perspective that might help in the future to bring out the potential in our teams. Let's be honest here though. The brand of 7 on 7 that Denison plays against local 2-3A schools is a joke. It's sandlot football at best. The kids don't take it seriously AT ALL, and there are no parents with football knowledge to help out, as coaches can't participate according to the UIL. Obviously, you know nothing about the 7 on 7 phenomenon that has become so popular and important in developing talent. You see article after article and coach after coach saying that the TRUE COMPETITIVE 7 on 7, SQT TOURNAMENTS, and state championship in College Station have helped their teams TREMENDOUSLY-- and even turned around so many programs (Sulphur Springs for one) There is even an article coming out in the New York Times about Texas 7 on 7...... Look, to say that Denison isn't a rich town like Highland Park is obvious. You notice, however, that SS, Sherman and MANY others aren't rich communities either (I'm sure many of those kids have summer jobs too.), yet their players have that extra committment to work on their own to improve their timing and skills. It takes parental or booster involvement to take part in THE REAL 7 on 7, but our kids coaches, and parents are apparently not interested. Doing so is more a matter of initiative and drive, not money. There is cost involved, but I would bet that the community would be willing to raise that to help our Jackets. Also, it not only improves the team, but gives them great exposure to scouts as well, as many attend each SQT. Trust me, I had TWO SONS who played football in Denison, and I KNOW FIRSTHAND the time it takes and the effort they put forth during the season. What I also saw was a lot of wasted time in the summer even though my sons and friends held jobs. Sherman, SS, and many others went far beyond the 2 hour summer workouts.... Make lame excuses if you like, but in a year where we have so many new players, the additional effort would have helped these guys .... a lot!!! I'm simply stating that practice together running routes etc. can pay HUGE dividends not only in bonding, but also maximizing the other standard summer conditioning workouts. If Sherman winds up taking that ax back this year, maybe you can ask them after the game if that extra work in the summer paid off for them.

Jacketbacker

Jacketbacker : 9/7/2010

Denison also participated in 7 on 7 with their skill players as well as 2 hr strength & conditioning 4 days a wk all summer. Do you really want to compare Denison to HP? Seriously, economically speaking HP average household income is $160,000 while Denisons is $38,000. These boys also held down jobs this summer earning money for cars, gas etc... I don't think Vince Young needed a summer job so I guess he had more free time. I suppose YOU could pay for these camps you want them to go to (around $400 for a 5 hr/day 3 day camp). If you don't think these boys put in enough time I will personally tell you that somedays my son is gone by 6 am and others he is not home until 7:30 pm. These kids deserve our support not criticism.

What is it with you people? You Bearcats are particularly mouthy this year, and that's saying something. Just Asking

A Question-- : 9/6/2010
I saw an interesting report on Channel 8 last night. Randy Allen, the HP coach was on the show and talking about this year's team. The players knew that they were doubted and viewed as less talented than many of the HP squads of the past. They got together all summer ON THEIR OWN and worked hard to improve. I've heard of other Scottie teams that have done this in the past too, where the quarterback gets the team together to run & work early in the mornings in the summer. Then, you read that Sherman's skill players took part in competitive 7 on 7 AND got together ON THEIR OWN to work on their timing, chemistry, etc At UT, Vince Young and his receivers did this one summer! .........Now, I know that the Jackets do the usual summer workouts. BUT, beyond that, do the Denison players EVER TAKE THE INITIATIVE to get together on their own and put forth the extra effort needed to improve themselves? I would just like to know, because we were certainly in the position of needing that this year with so many people doubting this team, and so many young, inexpeienced players facing a challenging year. Did it occur to any of the players or dads that it might be helpful to OUR TEAM to do this? Did any of these quarterbacks go to camps??

These Jackets are getting better. So, Sit up there on your cactus with your Buzzard buddies and have a laugh. These Denison kids are working hard on execution and thats the hold up right now. We'll see in district action. We will probably lose next week too, But our kids will fight hard. We made a QB change last night and found our gun just too late in the game.
