Whitesboro rolls

FRISCO -- The only thing stopping Whitesboro's first-team offense on Thursday night against Frisco Lone Star was the electric company.
Overcoming a 23-minute power delay in the second quarter, the Bearcats scored on their first seven possessions of the game and coasted to a 48-8 non-district victory over the first-year Rangers, evening their season record at 1-1.
"I was proud of our kids for coming out and taking care of business," said Whitesboro head coach Eddie Gill. "They looked pretty sharp. We had a short week playing on Thursday and coming off a tough loss to a quality opponent in Decatur, so I was pretty pleased with what I saw."
Quarterback Jordan Gill ran for two touchdowns, passed for another, and added an interception on defense. Trey Eleazer ran for a TD, caught Jordan Gill's scoring pass, and opened the second half with an 82-yard kickoff return that essentially ended the night for the Bearcat starters.
"Trey's a big, strong running back and a good receiver, a big target when we split him out," Eddie Gill said. "I'd say he had a pretty good night."
John Wood and Austin Purdum each also got into the scoring column for Whitesboro.
With 6:09 remaining in the second quarter and Whitesboro already leading 35-0, the lights went out at Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium, resulting in a stoppage of play.
But that didn't slow the Bearcats, who after the lights came back on drove 72 yards, all on the ground, to make it 41-0 with nine seconds remaining on Jordan Gill's second scoring sneak.
Whitesboro was electric enough in the first half, however.
Purdum finished with 80 rushing yards and Gill with 68, all in the first half. Gill also completed all three of Whitesboro's pass attempts the whole game for 107 yards.
The Bearcats needed only two plays to strike first, as a 32-yard pass from Jordan Gill to Wood set up Eleazer's 4-yard plunge for a 6-0 lead. Three plays and a punt later, the Cats had the ball again, and after a 19-yard pass to Clark and a 21-yard Gill keeper, Wood bulled into the end zone to make it 14-0.
Whitesboro tacked on a Jordan Gill sneak, a 56-yard pass from Gill to Eleazer, and a Purdum plunge to make it 35-0 before the light delay.
"We got thunderstormed out of our last scrimmage, so we had some game situations that hurt us last week," Eddie Gill said. "We felt like we could match up against Decatur ... but we weren't prepared the way we should've been. I thought we improved a lot over the course of six days."
The Rangers, in only their second varsity game ever, were held to one net yard of offense in the first half -- plus-45 through the air and minus-44 on the ground. Lone Star finished the night with 91 passing yards and minus-five rushing.
The Rangers, though, made school history in the fourth quarter, when Chris Anderson caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Will Campbell with 9:13 remaining, for the first touchdown ever for Lone Star. Jonathan Coney bulled his way up the middle for the 2-point conversion.
As pleased as he was with the quick start of his starters, Eddie Gill was hoping for a somewhat stronger showing from his second-teamers.
"I told the kids at the end, you're one play away from being a starter," he said. "So we've got to get some of those mistakes corrected."
