Volleyball Roundup -- SHS, DHS move to bracket play

WHITESBORO -- The Denison volleyball team won its pool while Sherman finished second in its cluster as both schools advanced to the champions bracket of the Whitesboro Invitational on Thursday.

Denison (9-10) defeated Pilot Point, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, Ponder, 25-14, 23-25, 25-11 and Whitewright, 22-25, 25-18, 25-12, to win Pool B.

The Lady Jackets host Denton Ryan in non-district action tonight before returning to the tournament on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Whitesboro.

For Sherman, Anna Jones had 10 kills and seven assists while Tayler Wittington added six kills and 20 blocks, Amber Clark put down six kills and Jasmine Armijo chipped in four aces and 12 assists on the day as the Lady Bearcats (5-13) defeated Van Alstyne, 25-17, 25-14, and Tom Bean, 25-16, 25-14, but lost to Sanger, 25-20, 25-18 in Pool D.

Sherman plays a non-district match at Frisco Heritage tonight before returning to tournament action against Paris at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

W'boro goes 2-1

The host Lady Wildcats finished second in Pool A by defeating Pottsboro, 25-15, 25-13, and Texoma Christian, 25-13, 25-16, but losing to Frisco Heritage, 25-12, 25-13.

In the three matches, Courtney Davis had 14 kills, 12 aces and 11 blocks while Kortni Dickson added 12 kills, Katelyn Labhart chipped in eight kills and seven digs, Becca Mock and Taylor Ezzell combined to hand out 38 assists and Rachel Urban collected 14 digs for Whitesboro (11-8), which continues tournament play in the champions bracket against Denison at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Gunter 2nd in pool

Joey Bailey had 25 kills and 11 digs while Harlee Johnson added 17 kills and 23 digs as Gunter defeated Gainesville, 25-18, 25-13, and Little Elm, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, but lost to Paris, 25-22, 25-14, in Pool C at the Whitesboro Invitational on Thursday.

Morgan Watson chipped in 47 assists, 11 kills and 10 digs, Meghan Mazerolle had nine kills and 13 digs and Kristi Cross contributed 14 kills for Gunter (13-7), which continues tournament action in the champions bracket against Sanger at 3 p.m.

In other action at the tournament on Thursday -- Pool A: Texoma Christian lost to Frisco Heritage, 29-27, 15-25, 25-19, but beat Pottsboro, 25-20, 25-23, and will play Whitewright at 8 a.m. in the challengers bracket and Pottsboro dropped all three of its matches and faces Ponder at 9 a.m. In Pool B, Whitewright lost all three of its matches while Pilot Point took second and will play Heritage in the champions bracket at 1 p.m.

Gainesville lost all three of its matches in Pool C and plays Van Alstyne at 9 a.m. in the challengers bracket. Van Alstyne defeated Tom Bean, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, but lost to Sanger and Sherman in Pool D. Tom Bean lost all three of its matches and plays Little Elm at 8 a.m.
