Candidates finalized in Sherman, Denison elections

By JONATHAN CANNON and KATHY WILLIAMS

In May, three of the five candidates on the Denison School Board and City Council elections will face at least one opponent. Candidates faced a 5 p.m. Monday deadline for filing.

In the Denison City Council elections, incumbent Jim McClure will face Jerry Wrenn and Andrea Dodier-Morris for Place 6 on the Council. Incumbent Michael Baecht is unopposed for Place 4.

No one has filed against either incumbent Sherman City councilor: Pam Howeth, District 3, and Joe N. Smith, District 1. However, the school district race is a different story. For Sherman Independent School District Board of Trustees three candidates are vying for Place 5: Mindi McGehee, Rob Bellew and Kiki Osterman. Incumbent Board president, Kate Whitfield, is without an opponent for Place 4. Andres Morales will seek Trustee Place 3. Peter Schulze had filed for the position, but withdrew Tuesday.

Schulze explained in a written statement, "I have withdrawn my candidacy for Place 3 on the SISD Board. Friends encouraged me to run when it looked like there might be a lack of candidates. However, as the filing deadline approached several other individuals filed, including Dr. Andy Morales, who also filed for Place 3. While I do not know Dr. Morales personally, it appears to me that he would be a fine addition to the school board. Therefore, I am no longer concerned about SISD lacking a suitable candidate and I have withdrawn my candidacy.

"I wish Dr. Morales, the other candidates, the sitting members of the Board, and everyone else involved with SISD all the best as they work on behalf of the youth of Sherman."

In the Denison School Board elections, incumbent Trustee David Hawley will face Susan Hooper for Ward 2, Place 3 and incumbent Bruce Hysmith will meet Regina Pruitt in the election for Ward 4, Place 4. Incumbent Frances Cameron is unopposed for Ward 1, Place 5.

Although the filing deadline for candidates was 5 p.m. Monday, those interested in filing as a write-in candidate have until 5 p.m. March 15 to do so.

No one has enough money to campaign against Kate Whitfield. She can dip into her personal funds and outspend you.

Who are Regina Pruitt and Susan Hooper? : 3/11/2010
Anyone know anything about these two candidates running for Denison School Board. We need some new blood on the DISD board.

Spring break? : 3/10/2010
Who works at C.O. over Spring break?
How would that work?
Give it to the maintenance guys?
Maybe Henry Scott will be there over the break.

Three for 1 : 3/10/2010
Is there any way that Ms. Whitfield could draw a contender so that the three new people vying the job don't have to battle it out.
It seems that the new candidates should have been given some counseling so that there could have been two races involving two individuals. I don't like to see elected officials getting a free pass. Being on the board has been a less than thankless job as of late. So, "Thank you Ms. Whitfield." But, I wish there had been two races.
Could Ms. Whitfield have a write-in opponent? Anyone know how that procedure works?
