Denison city council to host Wednesday work session

BY JONATHAN CANNON

HERALD DEMOCRAT

The Denison City Council will hold a work session on 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Council Chamber at the Municipal Building, 500 West Chestnut St.

The council will discuss continuation of the work sessions, which are currently held the Wednesday before the council's Monday meetings. During the session the council hears information about items on the proposed agenda, however voting on the items is held until the following Monday's meeting.

Councilors will also discuss an ordinance regulating the purchase of "crafted precious metals" by traveling merchants. City Attorney Tom Akins said the ordinance would require the merchants to keep purchase records similar to those required of pawn shops. It also would require the merchants make the records available to the police at regular intervals.

The council will discuss a request for a zoning change to a single family-5 district from commercial for a 2.62-acre property.

Finally the council will hear the police department's annual contact data report, which outlines the number of traffic stops, and subsequent searches and arrest, broken down by race. Assistant Police Chief Joe Clapp said the report is required by state law and also includes any complaints filed against the department for racial profiling. He said Denison PD did not have any such complaints this year.
