BONHAM -- Two Leonard residents died early Saturday morning when the experimental aircraft they rode in crashed.
William Pearson, the pilot, and Linda Wingo were pronounced dead at the scene, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Mark Tackett reported. Fannin County Justice of the Peace Joe Dale made the death pronouncement.
The crash happened at 8:02 a.m. at 1633 N. State Highway 78. The homemade aircraft took off from Jones Field Airport north of Bonham, flying north, then banked to the west. The initial investigation, being conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, indicates that the aircraft lost power and had to be restarted once it was in the air.
Suddenly, the aircraft went straight down, then burst info flames upon impact with the field. When the Bonham Fire Department arrived, the aircraft was engulfed in flames.
