Murder suspect soon to be extradited to Oklahoma

SHERMAN -- Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown said Tuesday that the Texas cases against Jason Lee Belew, 34, won't keep him from being extradited to Oklahoma to face a murder charge in the death of 11-year-old Dakota Hughes in Cartwright, Okla.
"Our cases are minor compared to what is going on there," Brown said. He said he hasn't heard from anyone in Oklahoma about withdrawing the Grayson County cases, but when he does, he will make that happen.
He said he will keep the Grayson County cases available to be filed just in case they are needed after Belew is prosecuted in Oklahoma.
Belew faces three Grayson County cases including evading arrest, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
Belew was arrested at 3 p.m. Sunday on a criminal mischief warrant out of Grayson County at a house in the 200 block of North Holly, just outside of Sherman.
On Monday afternoon, he signed an extradition order allowing him to be sent back to Oklahoma to face the murder charge.
Authorities contend that Belew killed Dakota Hughes in the early morning hours Sunday after a night of drinking with Hughes' aunt.
Emily Redman, district attorney for the 19th District in Oklahoma, said the little girl suffered injuries to her face, head, neck and genitalia.
Just a few weeks shy of her 12th birthday, Hughes was a sixth-grader at Colbert Middle School.
Colbert ISD Superintendent Jarvis Dobbs said the district was just trying to have a normal day Tuesday. He said the students who were closest to Dakota Hughes were told about her death on Sunday. Those students were not in school on Monday. He said the little girl's older sister is a senior in the school district and was not at school either Monday or Tuesday.
The district, he said, would do all that it can to make the appropriate counseling available for the students who need it.
The Oklahoma state medical examiner had not made a ruling on the cause or manner of death by Monday evening, spokeswoman Cherokee Ballard told media outlets.
Redman told reporters she has not made a decision, at this point, about seeking the death penalty against Belew.
The charges Belew currently faces are not his first brush with the law. Grayson County court records show that he pleaded guilty in March of 2003 to a charge of assault causing bodily injury and received one year probation, and deferred adjudication. The records show Belew paid all his mandated court costs and fines in relation to that conviction.

R.I.P. Baby girl, I hope you & your Daddy watch over your big sister... No child should die & in no way should a child be taken from the earth this way. Sadly this happens every damn day cause the abusers receive little to no jail time for the crime of child abuse & rape. & what will our children grow up to be when all they see is hate & misery?

Seriously we need to become BETTER parents!! These murderers were once children who were abused and didn't get the Intense help or love that they needed. If you can't be a Parent then don't have babies!!! I am so sickened of all the murder and abuse to children, Elderly, disabled ect.... These abused children most likely grow to become abusive (sexually, physically, drugs) there value of life is zero. They aren't getting the help they need as children and grow up to be monsters. I hate that these people don't get caught and when they do they get put back into society. There needs to be more focus on these issues and a lot more awareness!

What this man did is heinous and inexcusable,and it will not be excused by criminal law, nor will it be excused by God, but what about the child's parents and her aunt? There has been no mention that I have read of a parent or parents, but the aunt was asleep "after a night of drinking." That is interesting. She must have had a lot to drink if such a brutal murder could take place and not awaken her. And now, instead of flowers, donate to help pay funeral expenses? The child deserves a wonderful memorial service, but I think her parents and aunt should have to work and pay for it. That is, if they are not prosecuted and sentenced for negligence contributing to her death.

This just breaks my heart. I have a 10 year old daughter and cannot even imagine the pain this family is going through. I agree, they should hang him in the public square and sell tickets. She was only walking home from school. Something my kids do everyday...

What a coward! I think the needle is an easy way out for this THING! I think he needs to be tortured. Im sure when he gets thrown in prison and his inmates find out about him, he will be tortured.

My prayers go out to Dakota's family, I am so sorry for your loss and for what Dakota had to endure. Just know that when that sick SOB gets to where he's going he will know what she went through over and over again. I hope he does get death he deserves it.

WHY SHOULD THEY GET OFF SO EASY WHEN AFTER WHAT THEY HAVE DONE DO THE VICTIM & TO THE VICTIM'S FAMILY. I KNOW FROM BEING A MOTHER OF HAVING HER DAUGHTER RAPED AT THE AGE OF 13, & THE GUY GOT OFF WITH A "SLAP ON THE WRIST". SO PLEASE, TELL ME WHEN ARE WE AS PARENTS GOING TO SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH? & HAVE THESE "ANIMALS" THAT ATTACK & EVEN KILL OUR CHILDREN, STOPPED?? People like this make me sick....Send him to prison and let it be known what he did to this little girl to his fellow inmates. The prisoners in there I am sure will let him know what it is like to be taken against your will and killed!!!
