Meet The Enemy — Greenville
It’s been a tough couple of years for Greenville. The Lions are in the throes of a school-record 19-game losing streak and could make it two years straight without a victory with a loss to Sherman on Friday night at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium.
The Lions are certainly a lot more competitive this fall than they were last year, when eight players left the team rather than face disciplinary action for skipping practice, and about as many others suffered injuries serious enough to knock them out of action.
To be sure, six of their losses in 2011 were blowouts, but the Lions kept the other three games close fairly late. They led Royse City at halftime before the Bulldogs rallied for a 35-27 win, and they lost by only four to Denison last week and by seven to Mount Pleasant.
Lions coach Chawn Cooper — who, appropos of nothing, is rocking one of the best mustaches among Texas prep coaches — has Greenville on the right track and will return his team to football prominence if given a shot.
Shay Sellers has taken the majority of snaps for Greenville, with receivers Jeffro Davis, Maury Kelly and Jaquentin Patt his main targets and Justin Casselberry in the backfield. Davis has also played quarterback off-and-on over the last two seasons.
Sherman’s goal Friday is to turn right onto Sayle Street, make it through the game without any injuries to starting players, get on the bus, turn left off of Sayle Street coming home, and make it back safely.
If the Bearcats have the game in hand quickly, I would look for lots of playing time for folks like Kolby Milner, Torey Long and Josh Fleming in the second half.
For selfish reasons, I hope for a quick and painless contest where nobody gets hurt, the clock runs continuously in the second half, and I can be home by 11 like Bert.
