Head-On Collision Claims Man in Anna

By Ken Gaidziunas

Staff Writer

Anna police were called to the scene of a fatal accident early Monday on Texas 121 north of County Road 1220.

Sgt. Jeff Caponera said at approximately 4 a.m. a northbound Ford Explorer on Texas 121 crossed the yellow center line at about 4 a.m., colliding head-on with a semi. The driver of the Explorer, 36-year-old Juan Carlos Ortega, of Dodd City, was killed instantly.

The investigation is still ongoing, according to Caponera, with no charges anticipated against the truck driver.

"This was one of the worst wrecks I've seen in 16 years," Caponera said.

Last Thursday, Feb. 25, Anna officers investigated four separate burglaries: In the 100 block of Oriole, 1100 block of Annie Oakley, 1000 block of Oak Hollow and 300 block of Niagara Falls. All of the burglaries were the same, according to Caponera, with burglars entering vacant homes without any signs of forced entry and taking appliances. At this time there are no suspects.

Also on Feb. 25, officers were dispatched to Love's Travel Mart on an assault call. An unknown male entered Love's and subsequently got into an argument with the manager. According to Caponera, the manager asked the male to leave, then asked him to leave a second time at which time the male punched the manager in the face.

"We have a video of the assault, which is a Class A misdemeanor, and are following up leads," Caponera said. The suspect left in a white Toyota Celica, with the first three license plate numbers 995.

On Feb. 26, officers responded to an assault in progress call in the 900 block of South Powell Parkway. Officers found Anna resident Zachary Dillon, 25, assaulting his girlfriend and mother of his child. Dillon resisted arrest and after a struggle with the officers was arrested. Dillon has been charged with continuous violence against a family member, a third-degree felony; resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor; and destruction of property (police vehicle in the struggle), a Class C misdemeanor.

"Dillon was released from jail three weeks ago for a similar assault," Caponera said.

Also on Feb. 26, officers stopped a northbound vehicle on U.S. 75 near the Mantua Road exit.

After receiving permission to search the vehicle, officers found 80 pills, later determined to be Ecstasy.

The driver, 34-year-old Terry Schroeder, of Tulsa, Okla., was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony, and driving without a license.

He was booked into the Collin County Detention Center.
