The 113 incoming freshmen of Van Alstyne High School Class of 2014 spent their first three hours as high school students last Thursday morning at freshman orientation.

"You are now one of us," said VAHS principal Duke Sparks in his introductory remarks.

The morning, both fun and serious, was structured to create a positive experience for the freshmen in their first year in high school.

Throughout the morning they received support and guidance from juniors and seniors, who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.

During the morning students broke up into smaller groups with orientation leaders and moved to classrooms to complete ice-breakers.

The last orientations session was all business, with rules, regulations, class schedules and a tour of the building.
