With unmistakable gospel sounds drifting from the gazebo at Dorothy Fielder Park last Thursday night, Van Alstyne's final Downtown Summer Jam, hosted by the VA Chamber of Commerce, was under way.

Taking the stage for the evening's entertainment were King's Trail Cowboy Church band members Layne and Larry Sutton, who later were joined on stage by James Hodges of Saddlecreek Cowboy Church in Wosston.

Opening with Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors", the variety of music just kept flowing, from "Show a Little Kindness" to "Hallelujah, I'm Ready" to "Amarillo by Morning" and much more.

"This is cowboy church gospel music," said Layne Sutton as the duo launched into a rendition of "Prayers Morning, Noon and Night".

With the sun dipping behind City Hall and a cool breeze blowing away the day's heat, it was another perfect evening for young families with children, grayheads and graybeards, all enjoying the music with friends and neighbors.

"The chamber would like to thank everybody for coming out to our three Downtown Summer Jams," said chamber President Brenda McDonald. "And a special thanks to Diamond's, who supplied us with water, and Jim Smith of Bucksnort BBQ for the ice to keep the water cool."

"Hope you enjoyed the summer, and we'll be back next year," McDonald promised.
