Melissa Library Update 082610

The Melissa Public Library wishes to thank the Friends of the Melissa Public Library for their generous donation! As the closing of the little red building arrived, the Friends of the Melissa Public Library held a sale of shelves, old materials and library items for several days. The results of this hard work by our library supporters brought a generous gift to the new location. On Tuesday, August 17, the Friends of the Public Library presented a check for $1450 to Lorelei Perkins, Interim Director of the Melissa Public Library. This donation is earmarked for a display case to hold historical and archive materials for all of the community to enjoy. It is our hope to continue to develop our appreciation of the past as it gives us direction in the future. Thank you again, Friends, for your ongoing support. All community members are invited to join the Friends of the Melissa Library, see the information form in the library and on the library web site.

Here is some of what is new and happening at YOUR Library!

Summer Reading Program comes to a close:

We have SOARed INTO READING this summer with our children's and youth library readers! The program closed on August 23. We have had over 75 readers complete ten books each so far. Imagine, that is over 750 books read this summer! Melissa readers are sky-high!!

Story time is back!

Come every Friday, 10:15 - 10:30 am for lap babies (ages 0-2) and 10:45 - 11:15 am for preschoolers (ages 3-5). Adults must stay with their children during story times. If you have a request for a theme or book, see Mrs. Perkins.

Melissa Librarian IMPACTs Community: First Melissa hosted, Saturday, August 14, their first annual Drive for Kids event, benefiting the school-age children of North Collin County. Mrs. Perkins brought her favorite read-alouds (including Ain't Gonna Paint No More, by Karen Beaumont) and shared stories with the families. Over 100 children attended and received haircuts, school supplies, and other materials to start the school year. New on the Library Website!

Would you like a brand new set of encyclopedias for your family? Need to have access to business databases or enjoy doing family history? Have school children or college students at home? Just love information? The Melissa Public Library participates with the Texas State Library in providing you with access to online reference materials through TexShare databases. You can search multiple information resources from HOME on YOUR computer. There are 53 databases including business, health, literature, e-books, professional journals, newspapers and magazines. Your Melissa library card allows you access to the log-in and password to this great site. Come see the staff in the library.

Just in time for back to school, students, look at the Melissa Library web page and notice that you can now link to the card catalogs at the Melissa Intermediate and Middle School Library (thanks to Ms. Eichel) and to the Melissa High School Library (thanks, Ms. Niche).
