Knowing Jack 030510

As our five loyal readers out there know, we have a twitter account under the search heading- jacwalk @twitter.com. That's right, five followers keep up with scores and stuff about Howe and VA athletics. Makes me feel like I'm on radio, I'm tweeting but is anybody out there?

Jenna Jameson, noted actress in, Ahem.. adult movies is said to have over 10,000 followers and Shaq, the Big Aristotle has more. You would think that we could do better but alas, we stumble through the digital age.

Speaking of tweeting, which is just text messaging to a blog site, I like to set up my friends by preparing a message then saving it to the "drafts" bin. Or whatever. Like I will type in- Oh there's a squirrel in the road, now there's two, half-squirrels in the road behind me.I save that then send it to people who know I'm driving to a game somewhere and they freak out thinking I'm texting-driving. Would never do that.

Column Interruption: Why do a lot of kids, mine included, eat like they're at Medieval Times. No silverware.

At the end of May our current contract with Stephens Media, owners of this paper, will expire and we are in the early stages of exploring a new deal. They have stated that last season I let down at the end of the year and my golf and tennis coverage was not up to Stephens Media standards. My agent, Scott Boras, has explained that temporary slippage as fourth stage writers cramp and went on to detail my rigorous exercise routine that should prevent a recurrence of that slump.

Stephens has made an early offer of $200,000 for two years but they want to defer $198,000 of that for 25-years.

Listen, I don't buy green bananas so there is no way we are going to take that kind of a deal.

I feel like it's been a good season for me. Only a few misspelled names, I'm hitting below .500 in the mixed metaphor category.

Let's get this deal done so that we all can enjoy our summer vacations.

Column Interruption: It's okay to sit in a boat drinking beer. People will think your fishing.

I really hate to be the one to point this out but, if not me who and if not now when as Seinfeld would say. Many will remember the beat down we took when our sources let us down on the UIL alignment farce and rightfully so. But let's level the playing field so to speak by gently reminding our many readers of some success we had in our pre-season hoops predictions.

Covering four teams, boys and girls from Howe and Van Alstyne, we made predictions prior to the start of district play on just how those teams would fare. On our four predictions we were correct on three, missing badly on the boys 11-2A selection. Not on the top team where we picked Melissa, just on the rest.

In the December 25 issue we pronosticated that Gunter and Melissa would be the top two teams with Honey Grove just a step behind in the girls race. The three teams tied for the top with identical 10-2 records.

In the 10-3A girls race we felt that Paris, North Lamar and Commerce would be at the top at the end of the season. Actual finish- Paris, Commerce and North Lamar, thank you for asking.

On the boys side in 10-3A we only mentioned the top two, Paris and Anna and as you may remember and if you don't I am here to remind you that those two tied for the top spot.

Next week we will be doing the weather on channel 12.
