An Anna man was sentenced Friday for a sexual assault that took place in August 2008.

Nathaniel Edwards, 29, was convicted of sexual assault after a three-day trial. He was sentenced to 10 years' probation and lifetime registry as a sex offender.

"It was a good arrest and a good conviction on our part," said Anna police Sgt. Jeff Caponera, who added that Edwards had 10 days from the sentencing to register with the local police as a sex offender.

A traffic stop Friday led to a pair of arrests.

An officer stopped a vehicle in the 400 block of east F.M. 455 for a traffic violation. The officer smelled alcohol on the driver's breath and saw an open beer can in the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, the officer discovered a marijuana plant in the back seat and a bottle of hydrocodone pills in the glove box.

The driver, 31-year-old Timothy Copeland of Anna, was charged with possession of a dangerous drug, a Class A misdemeanor, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

The passenger was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
